Data Sources

County-level coal production data are drawn from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) Annual Coal Report (Form EIA-7A), which covers all active U.S. coal mines annually from 2001 to 2024. Records are aggregated from mine level to county level by five-digit FIPS code. Surface and underground mines are tracked separately; refuse-recovery mines are included in the total only.
